On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "The North West View of Ludlow Castle, in the County of Salop."  

DATE PRINTED: 1769.

SIZE: The printed area including the titles is 14 x 8 cm (5.5 x 3.25 inches) plus margins (v. small).

ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Unknown although many of these views were based on the earlier Buck Brothers drawings from the 1730's. 

PROVENANCE: Published in London by Newbery and Carnan, between 1765-1770 for "A Description of England and Wales. Containing a particular Account of each County, with its Antiquities, Curiosities, ......vol viii ".

TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.

VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank.

CONDITION: Good, suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:  Ludlow Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire, standing on a promontory overlooking the River Teme. The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman conquest and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England.
