DESCRIZIONE
Il cocomero asinino (Ecballium Elaterium) è una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle Cucurbitacee diffusa soprattutto nel Mediterraneo.
Cresce fino a 50cm di altezza e presenta un fusto prostrato, foglie ovate, piccoli fiori unisessuali bianco-gialli, e frutti che hanno l’aspetto di un piccolo cocomero spinoso di 3-4cm.
La particolarità di questa pianta riguarda i suoi frutti, essendo in grado di “sparare” i semi a diversi metri di distanza.
All’interno dei frutti infatti, si sviluppa una notevole pressione idraulica e, quando il frutto è maturo, il picciolo che funge da tappo lascia fuoriuscire liquido (dall’odore disgustoso) e semi che vengono sparati ad una velocità di circa 10m/s e una distanza anche superiore ai 10m.
Pensate che la pressione che si trova all’interno di un frutto maturo di Ecballium è molto superiore a quella di uno pneumatico di un’auto.
Fin dall’antichità, si conosco alcune proprietà del cocomero asinino.
Ad esempio sembra che un principio attivo della radice possieda proprietà analgesiche e antinfiammatori. Inoltre sembra la pianta venisse utilizzata per lenire malanni come sinusite o infezioni della pelle.
Da precisare che qualsiasi uso interno è sconsigliato, in quanto è considerata una pianta tossica, ad esempio può provocare seri disturbi gastrointestinali, in alcuni casi anche con il solo contatto con la pianta o liquido dei semi.
