SMOKY

The popularity of the SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTAL is due not only to its gorgeous look, but also to its affordability and the energy it provides. Grounding in an uplifting kind of way, the SMOKY QUARTZ also provides a subtle energy of protection and balance.
Just as with the citrine crystal, it is important to choose a natural SMOKY QUARTZ (not a heat treated one). A natural SMOKY QUARTZ will have a sense of lightness and translucency to it, even in its deeper tones.
Basically, the SMOKY QUARTZ is a variety of quartz that has a unique combination of various brown color tones (from light to very deep); due to irradiation as provided by Mother Nature.
You can often find rutiles (also called angel hairs) in the inner world of the SMOKY QUARTZ. These golden streams of energy offer the lucky SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTAL owner more power for healing, clarity and awareness. You can also often find rainbows and numerous mesmerizing formations in the inner life of the SMOKY QUARTZ. Just as with the clear quartz crystal, one can spend many hours exploring the inner life of the smoky quartz.
SMOKY QUARTZ comes in a variety of forms - from tumbled rocks and small points to clusters and impressive generators. There is also plenty of little souvenirs or sculptures made of SMOKY QUARTZ, as well as, of course, a variety of SMOKY QUARTZ jewelry.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THE SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTAL?
The unique combination of strong grounding and protective energy with the light, soothing and uplifting one is the quality that distinguishes SMOKY QUARTZ from other grounding and protective crystals and stones.
- History of Briolettes
Most faceted gemstones today are cut with a flat table and crown and pavilion facets. It's a style that maximizes the light returned to the eye and thus the brilliance of the gem. But at one time this was not the most popular faceting style. Back in the 17th century the Briolette was the favorite of royalty and aristocrats. A fine example is a diamond necklace that Napoleon presented to Empress Marie Louise containing 10 diamond briolettes weighing over 4 carats each. The necklace is now in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
The Briolette is a pear or drop-shaped gemstone which has its entire surface covered with long triangular facets. Historians believe that the Briolette cut originated in India about 800 years ago. The popularity of the Briolette in Europe was due to the famous French travelers and trader, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who brought Briolettes back from India.
The popularity of the Briolette started to decline in the late 17th century as gem cutting technology progressed and the early versions of the modern round, brilliant cut became popular. Many existing Briolettes were in fact recut using modern methods.
The Briolette regained popularity in the Victorian and Edwardian eras and was a favorite of Art Deco designers. However, Briolettes soon faded into obscurity once again. In large part is was a cost issue. A Briolettes has a lot of surface area and requires large pieces of rough stone. It is quite expensive to cut diamonds, rubies or sapphires as Briolettes, and gem cutters regard Briolettes as an inefficient use of the rough material. Only recently have Briolettes started to be seen again, particularly in the form of less expensive gemstone materials.
While it is true that Briolettes do not concentrate brilliance like a modern round brilliant cut, Briolettes have their own charm. They display color and reflect light from any angle, and have a quiet, refined elegance. They work especially well as earrings and pendants because they dangle and move, allowing them to catch the light. They are generally unencumbered by any setting except at the top, and this allows more of the gemstone to be visible than with any other cut. - All Gem Weights & Gold & Silver Weights are approximate.

I come from a long line of family jeweler’s ca 1943. Each piece I sell whether Vintage Estate, Trendy pieces from wholesalers, or my own Creations, they are precious to me. I have a wide selection of many pieces that are from all kinds of different Cultures that are rich with history for 1,000s of years. I know WOW huh! Each piece radiates these amazing personalities whether new or vintage. I hope my customers will enjoy their treasure & wear it with pride & confidence that the best jewelry components & one-of-a-kind gemstones are adorning their beautiful bodies.
- Here at ~MGJ~ we sell primarily three types of jewelry and on occasion miscellaneous items:
- I research what my wholesaler’s newest trends are for the changing seasons & purchase some of their inventory we call “finished goods” (already made jewelry pieces).
- Next several times a year I go out to Estate Sales & if I’m lucky I come across some really pretty “Vintage Estate” pieces that are a very good value & what I consider very well-made from multiple eras, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. On occasion I may sell a fun costume piece I find on my Estate Sale searches; or on occasion I make some unusual jewelry that may not be solid gold or silver but has a genuine focal Gemstone - those pieces are always disclosed as not solid gold or silver.
- Then there is my Workshop here on South Padre Island, TX where I design my own creations. I “never” make the exact same piece twice. I’m just not a fan of seeing ladies wearing all the “SAME IDENTICAL PIECES” from the popular designer-of-the-moment.
- First, I use “precious metals (gold or silver)”; rarely use anything else. You may see in some listings that Sterling Silver has a Gold "Overlay". It is still precious metal over precious metal.
- Second, I am a big believer in nature’s lovely bounty of glorious Gemstones available in every color imaginable. There are just so many & I like working with them all while trying to keep prices reasonable for my customers. I put a great deal of thought & creativeness in my designs. Sometimes it takes a while in the designing process before I am satisfied that my pieces are impressive, unique, & affordable considering the overwhelming competitive jewelry market. I’m all about the color, different textures & nature’s richness of exquisite, stunning, awe inspiring, dazzling magnificence that natural Gemstones provide, organic or mineral! You get the picture, I like to mix ‘em up!
- Thank you for looking at our store & we would appreciated it if you would come back any time as I am making unique pieces weekly.
