info:
The Cousins were a Belgian guitar band formed in the late fifties. They played Beat/Garage, R&R, instrumentals, Surf, Exotica.
The band started under the name 'Les jeunes équipes', but inspired by their frequent performances in the dance club Les Cousins
near the Brussels' "Grote Markt" (large market) they changed the name to' The Cousins'. In 1960 the band was discovered by record
manager Jean Kluger. They scored a big hit with Kili Watch that year, of which a million singles were sold. The song was an
adaptation of an Indian song that bassist Gus Derese (1929-2014) had learned from the scouts.

The success of 'Kili Watch' caused disagreement regarding the royalties. After composer Gustave Derese had filed the copyrights
of the gigantic hit in his name at SABAM, he left the group. He later founded the less successful band 'The Killy Jacks'.

Building on 'Kili Watch', the band continued to release similar singles for five years, such as 'Kana Kapila' (1961), 'Dang Dang' (1961)
and 'Pepermint Twist' (1962). They did not equal the success of 'Kili Watch' anymore. The other singles also hit the charts in Belgium, Germany, Italy, France, Denmark, Argentina and Zaire. In Argentina, The Cousins took on the clever name 'Los Primos' and obtained
the status of superstars.

At the end of 1966 the band called it quits. For 20 years after, The Cousins sporadically got together, for instance on the occasion of
the "Golden Oldies" and the "Diamond Awards".

On Sunday 18 September 2017 singer-guitarist André Van den Meersschaut passed away at the age of 80.
