“Just purchased 2 of these, one for myself and another for a friend. I bought the same heating pad over 20 years ago and it still works. Amazing that anything these days still works after 20 years. I love moist heat for my old back and neck and this pad is the best.”

Understanding the Switch: Press & Hold vs. 3-Setting
The Classic 055 uses a press-and-hold hand switch — squeeze to heat, release to cool. You control exactly when heat flows. If you doze off and your hand relaxes, the pad cools automatically as a built-in safety feature.
The MaxHEAT 155 uses a 3-setting one-touch switch (Low / Medium / High) that stays on hands-free until the 25-minute auto shutoff. Choose the 055 for manual control. Choose the 155 for set-and-forget convenience.

About the Thermophore Classic 055
The Classic 055 is the original Thermophore — the press-and-hold design that has been trusted by doctors and physical therapists since 1931. Same 14" × 27" large pad, same ~4 lb weighted body, same automatic moist heat from the fleece cover. The press-and-hold switch gives you complete manual control: squeeze to heat, release to cool. You decide exactly when heat flows.
If you doze off, your hand relaxes and the pad cools automatically — a built-in safety feature the 3-setting models don’t have. At up to 165°F it runs dramatically hotter than generic drugstore pads that max out around 120–140°F. Customers routinely report 15–20+ year lifespans. The most affordable Thermophore large pad.

How To Use
1
Place the pad on the treatment area. Lay the 14" × 27" pad on your back, shoulders, hips, or legs. The weighted pad conforms to your body for consistent heat contact. Do not lay on the pad. Plug in the 10-foot cord.
2
Squeeze the press-and-hold hand switch to activate heat. The pad heats only while you are pressing the button. It reaches up to 165°F. Release the switch at any time to let the pad cool down.
3
Maintain pressure or pulse as needed. Hold the switch for continuous heat or alternate pressing and releasing for pulsed therapy. The fleece cover automatically produces moist heat from ambient humidity — no water added. If your hand relaxes, the pad cools automatically.
4
The 25-minute auto shutoff ends the session safely. Recommended session length is 15–25 minutes. The cover produces moist heat for 20–30 minutes per session. Set aside to reabsorb humidity from the air before next use.
5
Wash the cover as needed. Remove the fleece flannel cover and machine wash separately in cold water. Do not wash the heating pad itself — wipe with a dry cloth only.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the press-and-hold switch work?
Squeeze the hand-held switch to activate heat and release it to let the pad cool. The pad only heats while you are actively pressing the button. If you doze off and your hand relaxes, the pad automatically cools as a built-in safety feature. The 25-minute auto shutoff provides an additional safety measure.
What is the difference between the Classic 055 and the MaxHEAT 155?
Both are 14" × 27" large pads reaching up to 165°F with automatic moist heat. The Classic 055 uses a press-and-hold switch — squeeze to heat, release to cool — giving you manual control and automatic doze-off safety. The MaxHEAT 155 uses a 3-setting switch (Low, Medium, High) that stays on hands-free until the 25-minute auto shutoff. Choose the 055 for manual control. Choose the 155 for hands-free convenience.
How does the Thermophore produce moist heat without adding water?
The fleece cover absorbs moisture from the humidity in the surrounding air. When the pad heats up, it activates that moisture into therapeutic steam that penetrates deeper than dry heat. No water, spray bottles, or damp towels needed. The cover produces moist heat for 20–30 minutes per session, then set aside to reabsorb moisture from the air.
How long do Thermophore heating pads last?
Many customers report using their Thermophore pads for 15, 20, or even 30-plus years. The weighted construction, durable heating elements, and quality fleece covers are designed to outlast generic pads that typically need replacement every 1–2 years.
Is the Thermophore Classic 055 HSA or FSA eligible?
Yes. The Thermophore Classic Model 055 is HSA and FSA eligible. It is also approved for Medicare reimbursement when prescribed for arthritis pain management.
Can I lay on this heating pad?
No. The pad is designed to be placed on top of the body area being treated. Laying on a heating pad can trap heat against the skin and increase the risk of burns. The weighted design ensures the pad stays in place and maintains full body contact without you laying on it.
Is the cover washable?
Yes. The soft fleece flannel cover is removable and machine washable. Keep it clean for optimal moist heat performance — the fleece fibers are what absorb humidity to create automatic moist heat. Do not wash the heating pad itself.
