 WORLD WILD LIFE

ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROMOTION OF NATURE CONSERVATION (SPNC)

LATE 1970s

The society was originally founded in 1912, but changed its name to the above in 1976.   Its aim is to promote nature conservation and in this process publishes books, reviews and bulletins.    Currently it publishes a quarterly bulletin entitled Conservation Review.

Its headquarters is in Nettleham, Lincolnshire.

We recently purchased at auction a series of wildlife watercolours which it had sponsored or  commissioned for these publications which we have been unable to trace.    Similar works in other of its publications were by well known wildlife artists such as Roger Gilmor,  Marjorie Blamey, Julie Hockin and Tony Lindsell.   They date from the late 1970s.

The quality of all is superb; one could almost call them true miniature portraits.     The subjects vary from fish, plants, butterflies, animals and birds.

This very fine full sized illustrative border for text  is also for the World Wildlife Fund" but is not captioned.   It has loose mounts.

Highly recommended.
