Two large antique photographs stuck down on either side of one sheet of cardboard - one on one side and one on the other side:
- Subjects:
(1) Written below the image: 'Maidstone. High Street'. It shows rows of buildings on either side of a central area / square. A monument can be seen in the middle of the scene. Several people can be seen towards the centre and most are blurred due to them moving when the photograph was taken. A horse-drawn cart can be seen near the right edge. We would date this image to circa 1870s.
(2) An evocative village scene with a thatched cottage in the centre and an arched bridge in front. On the left and right we can see parts of other thatched buildings. A hill rises up behind. Below the image written in ink 'July 2. 1895'. At the foot of the photograph printed within the image itself 'Allerford Bridge, Minehead. 17178 J.V.' - Photographed and / or published by:
(1) There is a blind stamp at the bottom left corner: 'Frith's Series' below which is a number printed within the actual image '1480'. This indicates that the photograph was taken by or on behalf of the Francis Frith company. - (2) The initials 'J.V.' indicate the photograph was likely taken by or for the James Valentine company.
- Photograph measures, excluding backing card, approximately:
(1) 16 x 20.75 cm.
(2) 18.75 x 29 cm. - Notes: The backing board measures about 21 x 29 cm. For the avoidance of doubt please note that the two photographs are attached to one sheet of backing board (one on either side).
Condition: various scuffs, scratches and other blemishes to the images; some bumps and wear to the corners and edges of the backing card; the highlights have blown out / bleached out somewhat on the thatched cottage image; the backing card is somewhat wavy; general wear typical of an item of this type and age. Condition is subjective so please study the photographs carefully to make your own judgement.
