Bartolomeo Pinelli, (Italian, 1781–1835) - A Peasant Family in the Campagna - 1807–08 - Canvas Wall Art
This watercolour, with pen and wash, shows a peasant family gathered outdoors beside a stone wall and an arched recess. At left a man in a rust-coloured jacket, blue breeches and a broad hat leans on a long staff. In the centre a small child sits in a woven basket, reaching toward a seated woman who wears a white bodice, an apron and a red headscarf. Beside them an older woman in a white cap bends forward over the group. A wooden stool, a lower bank of grass and a distant line of trees complete the scene, which is painted in soft greys, with touches of pink, blue and green.
The scene presents the rural family as a unit at rest, with the father standing apart and the women and child in close contact. The exchange of hands between the seated woman and the child suggests a small domestic task, perhaps the sharing of food or the handling of a simple object. The wall and arch set the household at the edge of a farm or villa estate, and the family's modest dress and tools signal their place in the working life of the countryside around Rome.
