These are two antique German handmade, decorated unglazed clay / earthenware (or bisque china) marbles, dating from the late 19th to very early 20th century (circa 1880s–1910s).
During this era, German cottage-industry potteries (primarily in Thuringia and Saxony) hand-rolled or pressed fine clay spheres and decorated them by hand with line brushes or stamp-like stripers before a low-temperature firing.
Marble 1: Larger Plaid / Cross-Hatched Lined China / Clay
Size: Measures approximately 0.80 inches (~13/16″ or ~20.3 mm) on the caliper gauge.
Body / Base: Unglazed off-white / light cream bisque clay.
Pattern / Decoration: Hand-painted intersecting grid or "plaid" pattern consisting of multiple parallel burnt orange / russet-brown bands crossing fine teal / green painted accent lines.
Manufacturing Characteristics:
Typical hand-rolled out-of-round shape with fine natural drying/firing fissures and small surface inclusions common to antique earth marbles.
Marble 2: Smaller Multi-Pattern Decorated Clay
Size: Measures approximately 0.62 inches (~5/8″ or ~15.8 mm).
Body / Base: Weathered gray / earthen unglazed clay with general handling patina.
Pattern / Decoration: Hand-painted bullseye / concentric red-burgundy rings on one hemisphere and a distinct dark blue / black 3-to-4 brushstroke radiating claw/spray motif on the opposite side.
Manufacturing Characteristics:
Hand-shaped sphere with slight asymmetry and visible striations from rolling.
Detailed Condition Assessment
Marble 1 (Plaid / Larger): Very Good (VG) for age / material
Pigment / Pattern: Crisp, saturated orange pigment with moderately faded/worn teal green intersecting stripes.
Surface: Minor aggregate contact fleabites, light ground-wear scuffing, and minor pinprick pits from manufacture.
Structural: Free of major structural fractures, deep spalls, or large missing chunks.
Marble 2 (Concentric & Stroke / Smaller): Good (G) to Very Good (VG-)
Pigment / Pattern: Painted decoration shows surface erosion consistent with active play wear, though the red rings and dark accent strokes remain distinct and well-defined.
Surface: Moderate overall surface patina, embedded ground soil/darkening in micro-crevices, and scattered fine micro-chips/roughness.
Structural: Completely intact sphere without structural cracks or delamination.
Dry-Clean Only: Do not submerge or scrub in water or solvents; antique cold-painted or low-fired clay pigments will wash away or bleed.
Gently lift loose dust using a soft dry microfiber cloth or soft nylon artist brush.
