About This Meteorite
NWA 7831 is a special type of meteorite that may have come from Asteroid Vesta!
Vesta is the second largest asteroid in our solar system with a diameter of about 326 miles, can sometimes be seen from Earth through backyard telescopes and is even visible naked eye without any optical aid due to its reflective surface and brightness!
A massive object collided with Vesta, ejecting material off of the asteroid and that material made a journey all the way to earth and landed as meteorites!
NASA's Dawn Spacecraft orbited around Vesta from July 16, 2011 to September 5, 2012. Vesta has a rugged topography and evidence of a volcanic history on its surface which is very uncommon for asteroids.
Asteroid Vesta is unique in that it is differentiated meaning it has a crust, mantle and core similar to Earth.
The Dawn Mission proved that Vesta formed early in the birth of our solar system.
NWA 14683 meteorite displays a beautiful matrix of pyroxene, olivine grains and plagioclase.
As an astronomer and meteorite hunter, I am fascinated by the journey meteorites have taken through space and the scientific insights they hold.
The Cosmos has an extraordinary story to tell—this meteorite preserves one small chapter of it.
