📚 Description

A collection of six hardback books covering popular science, natural history, exploration, mathematics and technology. The selection brings together accessible scientific writing, personal accounts of wildlife expeditions and books examining how science, mathematics and computing affect everyday life.

1. A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson (2003)
An accessible and often humorous exploration of scientific discovery, ranging from the origins of the universe and the formation of the Earth to geology, physics, chemistry, biology and human evolution. Bryson examines how scientists developed our understanding of the natural world, introducing many of the personalities and discoveries behind modern science.

2. The Body: A Guide for Occupants - Bill Bryson (2019)
An entertaining examination of the human body, exploring its organs, biological systems, remarkable capabilities and vulnerabilities. Bryson explains the science of human anatomy and physiology while investigating medical discoveries, disease and the extraordinary complexity of everyday bodily functions.

3. Adventures of a Young Naturalist: The Zoo Quest Expeditions - David Attenborough (2017 edition)
An account of Attenborough's early wildlife expeditions for the BBC's pioneering Zoo Quest television series, travelling to Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay in search of remarkable animals.

This 2017 publication revisits material originally published in three books: Zoo Quest to Guiana (1956), Zoo Quest for a Dragon (1957) and Zoo Quest in Paraguay (1959). These were subsequently combined in abridged form as The Zoo Quest Expeditions in 1980.

The book provides an insight into Attenborough's early broadcasting career and the wildlife encounters, people and challenges involved in producing natural-history television during the 1950s.

4. The Eye of the Wind - Peter Scott (1968 sixth impression)
The autobiography of Peter Scott, the British naturalist, conservationist, artist and ornithologist. Scott recounts his experiences and interests, including wildlife, painting, sailing and conservation, reflecting a life closely connected with the natural world.

5. Humble Pi: A Comedy of Maths Errors - Matt Parker (2019)
An entertaining exploration of mathematical mistakes and their sometimes surprising consequences. Parker examines errors in engineering, computing, finance, statistics and everyday life, demonstrating how seemingly small miscalculations can produce extraordinary results.

Written with humour and accessible explanations, the book illustrates the importance of mathematics in the modern world.

6. Business @ the Speed of Thought - Bill Gates (1999)
Bill Gates examines how digital technology, information systems and the internet can transform business operations and decision-making. Written during a period of rapid technological change, the book offers an interesting perspective on the development of digital business and the expectations surrounding computing at the end of the twentieth century.

All six books are hardback editions with dust jackets, offering a varied collection for readers interested in science, wildlife, exploration, mathematics and technological development.

⭐ Condition

Overall condition: All six books are in generally good used condition, with interior pages ranging from good to very good and relatively little evidence of use. The dust jackets have varying degrees of handling and shelf wear. The older Peter Scott volume shows more noticeable age-related wear.

A Short History of Nearly Everything: Pages are in good to very good clean condition, with hardly any signs of use. The dust jacket has some minor scuffing and shelf wear around the upper and lower edges.

The Body: Pages are in good to very good clean condition, with relatively minor signs of use. The dust jacket has some scuffing and handling wear around the upper and lower edges, including a slightly bumped corner.

Adventures of a Young Naturalist: Pages are in good to very good condition, with very little evidence of use. The dust jacket is in reasonably good condition, with some minor scuffing around the upper and lower edges and along the spine, together with a little general surface wear.

The Eye of the Wind: Interior pages are generally in good, clean condition, with some slight yellowing towards the edges. The closed-page edges show age-related discolouration and a little foxing, which is not particularly apparent when looking through the pages. The book opens rather widely near the title page, suggesting some slight weakness in that area of the binding, although the pages remain attached to the text block. The dust jacket shows signs of age, with some minor tears along the upper edge and some staining to the rear and edges. Overall, a reasonably presentable copy for its age.

Humble Pi: Pages are generally in good to very good condition, with only insignificant signs of use. A few pages have slightly curled edges, which prevent the book from closing completely flat without assistance. The dust jacket has some scuffing around the upper and lower edges and a little wear to the inner flaps.

Business @ the Speed of Thought: Pages are in good to very good clean condition, with relatively minor yellowing to the edges. The dust jacket has minor scuffing around the upper and lower edges and a little mottling to the surface.
