Wonderful vintage hand-painted tin chamberstick / portable candle holder, dated 1945 on the underside along with the word “Georgetown.”
This unusual candleholder features a tall curved reflector decorated by hand with a colorful heart, tulip/floral and foliate folk-art design against a dark background. The round drip pan is decorated around the exterior, and even the curved carrying handle on the back has hand-painted floral decoration.
The design has a strong Pennsylvania Dutch / Pennsylvania German folk-art influence, although the exact maker and geographic origin have not been identified. “Georgetown 1945” is hand-inscribed/painted on the underside and is presented as found; I am not attributing it to a particular Georgetown.
Traditional fabricated metal construction includes a seamed candle socket, rolled edges, drip pan, tall reflector and rear carrying handle.
Measurements:
Approx. 6.75” tall
Approx. 2.5” diameter at base/drip pan
Weight: approx. 8.5 oz.
Condition: Vintage condition with substantial authentic age and use wear, including paint loss, scratches, oxidation/patina, discoloration and old residue around the candle cup. Please examine photos closely as they are an important part of the condition description. The piece has not been cleaned or restored, preserving its original painted surface and underside inscription.
A particularly appealing piece of mid-century American folk art for collectors of painted tinware, toleware, Pennsylvania Dutch-style decorative arts, primitive lighting and early candleholders.
