JIMMY CARTER OWNED & USED DESK CLOCK by Baignoire Cartier, Gilt Brass - Presidential Provenance
Certificate of Authenticity - Full Provenance with 2 COAs - 1 Year Warranty

Full Provenance with COA - Part of our Renowned Celebrity Collection - 1 Year Warranty

Few objects from the estate of President Jimmy Carter invite the imagination quite like this Cartier desk clock. The Carters were famously modest in their personal lives, and their longtime home in Plains, Georgia reflected that unpretentious character. Against that backdrop, an elegant Cartier clock such as this is particularly intriguing. Was it part of their life in Plains, or more likely did it belong to another chapter of the Carter story?

A desk clock, after all, is an object meant to occupy a place. It sits on a desk, table, credenza, or shelf, quietly marking the hours as correspondence is written, visitors received, meetings held, and decisions made. And with a clock from the estate of a President of the United States, there is one irresistible question: where did it sit?

Could this Cartier have accompanied the Carters to Washington? Might it have stood somewhere within the White House during the four years of the Carter presidency? Perhaps even on a table or desk in the Oval Office?

Those questions must remain unanswered. Yet given the Carters' famously restrained lifestyle, the juxtaposition of this luxurious Cartier with their otherwise modest domestic world makes its history especially tantalizing. Its documented Carter estate provenance is certain. Where within that extraordinary life it once marked the passing hours is left for history, and its next owner, to ponder.

The clock itself is unmistakably Cartier. Its classic white dial features large Roman numerals and Cartier's timeless design language, a style that has remained largely unchanged because it is so enduringly successful. Surrounding the dial is a richly colored green marbled case evocative of fine malachite, accented by warm gilt trim that beautifully frames the display. Its blue cabochon sapphire-style setting crowns on the back, and an easel-style hinged stand with signature Cartier "C" motif feet, result in a clock that is sophisticated, restrained, and immediately recognizable as Cartier.

What elevates this piece far beyond its design is its provenance. It represents a tangible connection to one of the most admired presidential families in modern American history. Carter's legacy extends far beyond his years in the White House through decades of humanitarian work, diplomacy, and public service. Objects from his personal surroundings offer a particularly tangible connection to that extraordinary life, and with a desk clock, there is an added fascination: wherever it was placed, it would have quietly marked the passing hours as Carter lived through a remarkable span of American history.

Unlike formal presentation gifts, ceremonial objects, or political memorabilia created for public display, this is a personal work or household item. Those are often the most fascinating artifacts because they were chosen to be lived with and enjoyed. It is easy to picture this clock marking the passage of time through countless ordinary and extraordinary moments alike, whether in Georgia, Washington, or elsewhere during the remarkable lives of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

The reverse is signed Cartier Paris and fitted with the traditional winding and setting controls expected of a fine mechanical desk clock.

It remains in overall very good condition and was clearly used presumably for a number of years. We have not cleaned or polished the watch or done anything to the outside of it - we left it just as we acquired it which includes signs of use.

  • 100% satisfaction guarantee for all of our watches. If you are in any way unsatisfied with it, you are welcome to return it in the condition it was sold anytime within 30 days for a full refund of the purchase price. Our goal is to exceed your expectations throughout the buying experience. We hope you love it!

  • The water resistance of vintage watches can no longer be guaranteed and is not covered under the watch's warranty. We don't recommend getting a vintage watch wet - and really don't recommend showering or diving with it - even one that was originally designed to be waterproof.

  • In the last 12 years we have safely shipped thousands of high value watches around the world (to over 70 countries!).

  • Wait until you see how big the box is that your watch is coming in!

(Please do remember though that while we do our very best and have careful procedures and quality control inspections - we will again fully re-test the proper functioning of your watch after you pay, right before we send it to you -
from time to time some courier workers don't handle packages the way we think that they would want their own packages to be handled.

Watches are ultra-precision instruments, and the timekeeping of most is governed by a small spring that is only about 1/8 the thickness of a human hair. The vast majority of our watches arrive safely and problem free. However at times vintage watches
and their hairsprings can be sensitive to rough courier handling or just having a difficult trip to you.

But even on a bad day there's still good news... We offer a full one-year warranty on virtually every watch we sell (unless occasionally specifically stated otherwise), so if anything happens to it in transit or goes wrong anytime in the first year, we will gladly repair it for you at no charge. Yes, even the older vintage watches. So sit back, relax, and dream about the first place where you're going to wear your new watch!

  • Our official warranty in many ways mirrors those of a number of the watch manufacturers and covers the proper timekeeping of the movement. It does not cover things like abuse, being dropped, crystals, bracelets, crowns, case parts etc. or water resistance. While we are the sole determinants of what qualifies for warranty work.... even if you have a problem that you don't think will qualify for coverage, tell us about it anyway. We are here to serve and just might be able to help you.

  • Winning bidders must fully pay within 48 hours of the end of the auction. After 48 hours the watch will be relisted.

  • To be fair to all bidders, we make it our practice not to end an auction early.

  • Because of the high rate of lost items and number of fraudulent payments, we do not sell or ship to Indonesia or Africa.

Payment information - we accept:
  • Paypal
  • Visa, American Express, Mastercard, and Discover via eBay checkout
  • Check (We have to hold the watch until the check clears.)

All shipments are fully insured.

International shipments will sent via U.S. International Express Mail or FedEx fully insured.
