Up for auction/sale is a genuine, 1,700-year-old Roman Provincial bronze coin minted at the military capital of Colonia Viminacium (located in modern-day Serbia).
- Mint Location: Colonia Viminacium (Moesia Superior)
- Date Range: Mid-3rd Century AD (Circa 239–255 AD)
- Diameter: approx. 25 mm
- Material: Bronze / Copper Alloy
Design Details:
- Obverse (Front): Laureate, draped profile bust of a 3rd-century Roman Emperor facing right (likely Gordian III or Philip the Arab). The features are heavily worn and smoothed from extensive ancient circulation.
- Reverse (Back): Features Provincia Moesia (the personification of the province) standing facing forward with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by the two military animal mascots of the region: a Bull on the left (symbolizing Legio VII Claudia) and a Lion on the right (symbolizing Legio IV Flavia Felix). Faint remnants of the original
P M S COL VIM inscription can be traced near the edges.
Condition: Fair to Good (FR-G) overall. The coin shows heavy ancient circulation wear and smoothing to the central figures, but the iconic shapes of the provincial goddess, the bull, and the lion remain clearly recognizable. It features an attractive, stable, untouched dark earthen patina with typical minor surface pitting. Thick and structurally solid planchet.
