A single paged vellum obligation bond between Robert Bowes a burgess in Durham and Christopher Atkinson of Hag House, also County Durham. The agreement is dated 26 May 1564, during the sixth year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first. Robert Bowes was an English diplomat, stationed as permanent ambassador to Scotland from 1577 to 1583. He was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge. He served under his father in the defence of the borders. In 1569 he was sheriff of the county palatine of Durham, and helped his brother, Sir George Bowes, to hold Barnard Castle against the rebel earls. Afterwards he was sent in command of a troop of horse to protect the west marches. In 1571 he was elected M.P. for Carlisle. In 1575 he was appointed treasurer of Berwick, and in this capacity had many dealings with the Scottish court.
The agreement appears to be underwritten by property and land in Durham, including messuages, closes, moors, Commons, commons of pasture and the like,  The document is signed by Robert Bowes.
The document is in old abbreviated English and is difficult to read. Please reassure yourself that you follow and agree with my interpretation before bidding. The remnants of a tail and seal are found in the bottom right corner.  The document is in reasonable condition, but has some wear and localised discolouration. The text is legible throughout.
