Professor
Xavier of the Uncanny X-Men realized that a separate group was needed to train
the growing number of young mutants being discovered. This group became the New
Mutants. Originally consisting of
Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma, Wolfsbane, and Psyche, the New Mutants quickly
added others to its ranks.

for the 1983 series NEW MUTANTS #1-23, NEW MUTANTS ANNUAL #1, and NEW MUTANTS SPECIAL
#1, all written by Chris Claremont.
In

Mutants #1, the team gets acclimated to their new home, new talents,
new friends, and new teachers, unaware that they are being watched; Moira
learns that Professor X has a son; and Psyche is attacked in the Danger Room by
an unknown assailant; Origin of Karma. Second appearance of the New Mutants
(after Marvel Graphic Novel #4).
In

Mutants #2, the Sentinels attack the New Mutants, who learn that they
are caught up in a web of intrigue involving the government; the Hellfire Club
wants the New Mutants; Col. Rossi returns from the dead; and Psyche's attack
seems to have been initiated by Prof. X.

Mutants #3, Psyche wonders whether the monster that attacked her is the
Demon Bear that killed her parents; Illyana remembers how she killed some of
the X-Men; Psyche's monster strikes again, this time attacking all the New
Mutants.
In

Mutants #4, regrouping after the realization that Prof. X had been
under Brood influence, the New Mutants set out to find the person who is
threating Stevie on the telephone -- who turns out to be another student in
Stevie's dance class, a victim of child abuse.

Mutants #5, the New Mutants meet Team America at a fair, where they are
attacked by Viper and the Silver Samurai; Viper captures Psyche and blackmails
Team America into stealing a certain object; the New Mutants and Team America
join up to go to the rescue.

Mutants #6, Karma tries to gain help from Gen. Coy, her crime-lord
uncle; Team America recovers the crystal Viper wants from an AIM fortress in
Mexico; the New Mutants rescue Psyche; and a mysterious assailant
"claims" Karma, body and soul, forever.

Mutants #7, Prof. X, suspecting foul play in Karma's disappearance,
sends the New Mutants to Rio de Janiero with Sunspot's archaeologist mother,
who is captured by the Hellfire Club; the New Mutants rescue her, unaware that
Sunspot's father is plotting against her.

Mutants #8, the
New Mutants and Sunspot's mother, journeying down the Amazon River, are
attacked by natives; Cannonball captures one, who turns out to be not what she
seems; their ship is destroyed, and they are captured by -- Romans?!? First appearance of Amara Aquilla (before
she becomes Magma).
In

Mutants #9, the New Mutants and Amara are taken to Nova Roma, a hidden
city near the headwaters of the Amazon, where they are caught in a power
struggle involving Amara's father; the boys are forced to fight in the arena;
and Wolfsbane is hailed as a god.
In

Mutants #10, as Cannonball, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane try to figure out
what's going on, Psyche and Amara are captured and taken to Selene for a
sacrificial ritual; Selene throws Amara into a lava pool, and Amara re-emerges
with super-human powers, demanding vengeance.

Mutants #11, as Amara battles Selene, the New Mutants help Amara's
father defeat Gallio; Sunspot learns the truth about his father; the New
Mutants rescue Psyche and Amara; and Amara, a mutant, wonders whether she will
become like the New Mutants, or like Selene.

Mutants #12, Sunspot confronts his father, vowing that he and the New
Mutants will do everything in their power to stop him; DaCosta decides to join
the Hellfire Club; Amara loses control of her powers in Rio de Janiero, and
decides to join the New Mutants.
In

Mutants #13, Magma arrives at the school; Kitty and her friend/computer
whiz Doug Ramsey gain control over a government-owned Sentinel; Kitty feuds
with the New Mutants; Prof. X worries about Sunspot and Wolfsbane; Magma begins
to cope with her new responsibilities. First appearance Doug Ramsey (later becomes Cypher).
In

Mutants #14, S'ym follows Illyana to earth and battles the New Mutants;
they learn that Illyana is a mutant, with the power of teleportation, but she
keeps her sorcery a secret; Doug gets a scholarship to the Massachusetts
Academy, the school run by the Hellfire Club.
1st appearance of Illyana Rasputin as Magik.
In
New
Mutants #15, Magik sends her astral form to the Massachusetts Academy
and learns that the White Queen has captured Kitty and brainwashed Doug; the
New Mutants learn that Magik is a sorceress; they head off to the rescue, but
are met by the White Queen.
In
New
Mutants #16, The New Mutants make a quick retreat and try to free Kitty
and Doug by stealth; they are attacked by the Hellions, a group of teenage
mutants under the tutelage of the Hellfire Club; Magik rescues Psyche, but the
rest of the New Mutants are captured. First appearance of Warpath and the
Hellions.
In
New
Mutants #17, Magik gives Psyche an introduction to Limbo, then
transports them back to the Massachusetts Academy, where the Hellions propose a
duel; it is interrupted by Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost; in the chaos, Magik
teleports the New Mutants and Kitty back home.
In
New
Mutants #18, Danielle Moonstar knows that the Demon Bear that killed
her parents is coming for her; Rachel Summers, displaced from her own time,
tries to contact Professor X; Warlock tries to flee from Magus, his father; the
Demon Bear comes for Danielle Moonstar and critically wounds her. First
appearance of Warlock. Bill Sienkiewicz begins as new regular
artist.
In
New
Mutants #19, Danielle Moonstar fights for her life in surgery; Warlock
and Magus fly past the Starjammers, who realize they are heading for Earth;
Magik starts to manifest armor; the Demon Bear attacks again, transporting the
New Mutants and two prisoners to his own dimension.

Mutants #20, the New Mutants battle the Demon Bear; officer Tom Corsi
and nurse Sharon Friedlander are transformed into Indians; Magik defeats the
Demon Bear with her Soulsword; Danielle Moonstar's parents return from the
dead, having been freed from the Demon Bear's power.

Mutants #21, the New Mutant girls host a slumber party with their
friends from Salem Center; Warlock destroys Asteroid M and lands near Xavier's
school; after some chaos, the New Mutants bring in Doug to communicate with
Warlock, and invite him to join the school.

Mutants #22, Sunspot starts acting funny while training with Colossus;
Professor X and Moira study Warlock; Selene makes a connection with the
Hellfire Club; Wolfsbane writes a fairy tale, in which her beloved is consumed
by shadow, and she kills the one responsible.

Mutants #23, Selene and Emmanuel DaCosta join the Hellfire Club;
Sunspot consumes Colossus; Aletys brings Magneto to his island; Mirage and
Cannonball follow Wolfsbane into New York City, and realize that Wolfsbane and
Sunspot have the powers of Cloak and Dagger.
