Auberge du Soleil opened in 1981 on a sunlit hillside above Rutherford, founded by French restaurateur Claude Rouas, an early figure in California wine-country fine dining. Its restaurant paired a South-of-France sensibility with local California ingredients, and Rouas went on to develop the adjoining hillside inn and later Napa properties such as Calistoga Ranch and Solage. The restaurant remained a fixture of the valley's dining scene, in time earning years of Michelin Guide recognition.
