Vintage Barr Bros Model 500 Commercial Butcher Tool 8-Blade Meat Tenderizer MCM

Heavy (weighs just under 2lbs) mid-century commercial grade tool made in the USA. There are some signs of rust on the blades (see photos). Per Google AI search:

This specific meat tenderizer was manufactured during the mid-20th century, most likely between the 1940s and the 1960s.

Production Context:

The Manufacturer: The Barr Brothers Company originally started out as a prominent cutlery and specialty toolmaker based out of Oakland, California (later shifting operations and becoming well-known for meat industry hooks).

The Era: During this mid-century period, heavy, cast-metal commercial kitchen tools were standard in American butcher shops. They were built to be entirely utilitarian, utilizing a solid cast handle and thick, individual carbon steel blades that could be disassembled by the nuts on the side to be sharpened or replaced.

The Barr Brothers Model 500 is composed of two different types of metal:

The Handle and Frame: The heavy-duty handle is made from cast aluminum. It was cast with a slightly pebbled texture to provide a better, non-slip grip for butchers when handling raw, wet meat.

The Blades, Bolts, and Spacers: The individual serrated blades and the hardware holding them together are made from high-carbon steel or early commercial-grade stainless steel.

Because it contains high-carbon components, it can develop surface rust if left wet, which is why vintage collectors typically dry them immediately after cleaning and apply a thin layer of food-safe mineral oil to protect the blades.
