DESCRIPTION

An original 1921 printed illustration by celebrated Punch artist Leonard Raven-Hill, titled “Under the Weather”, which has been later hand-coloured.

The humorous cricket cartoon features the British Lion and Australian Kangaroo and relates to the 1921 Ashes period, when Australian cricket was enjoying remarkable success against England.

Leonard Raven-Hill (1867–1942) was a prominent British illustrator and cartoonist closely associated with Punch, contributing political, social and sporting illustrations to the magazine for many years.

Printing visible on the reverse of the sheet is consistent with this being an original period magazine page rather than a later reproduction. The colouring appears to have been applied subsequently and is therefore described as later hand-colouring rather than original period colour.

An appealing piece of early 20th-century cricket history combining sporting interest, period humour and the work of an important British illustrator.
