CONDITION REPORT

Good antique condition with age-related toning and occasional minor marks to the paper. The mounted area surrounding the engraving also shows some light age-related marking. The later wooden frame has general surface wear, small scratches and marks consistent with age and use.

Framed and glazed with hanging cord fitted. The engraving has not been removed from the frame for inspection. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition report.

DESCRIPTION

An original antique steel engraving titled “The Tyne from South Shields, Durham,” drawn by noted British topographical artist Thomas Allom (1804–1872) and engraved by William Kelsall.

Dating to approximately 1832–1835, the view was produced for the illustrated publication “Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham and Northumberland Illustrated.”

The detailed maritime scene depicts sailing ships and smaller boats on the River Tyne, with the historic South Shields waterfront in the background. Both T. Allom and W. Kelsall are credited beneath the image.

Close magnified examination shows finely engraved linework without the regular dot-screen pattern associated with modern photomechanical reproductions.

Presented under glass with a decorative multi-line mount and a later oak-effect wooden frame.
