Launched in 1995 and created by perfumer Claire Cain for the prestigious Italian fashion house Nino Cerruti β a house whose heritage dates to 1881 and whose identity has always been rooted in the quality, softness and nobility of fine textiles β Cerruti 1881 Pour Femme is one of those rare fragrances that sits entirely outside the competition for attention and has absolutely no need of it. Described by critics and reviewers alike as "the youngest of the great classics," it is a fragrance of effortless refinement, quiet sophistication and deeply soothing femininity that has aged more gracefully than almost any other 90s release.
Claire Cain built the composition around a conceptual "fleur de lin" β an imaginary note evoking the feel of freshly laundered linen in the Cerruti tradition β with German chamomile at its heart providing a uniquely soothing, herbal and almost soporific quality that is at once deeply distinctive and completely unlike any other fragrance note in perfumery. Linen Flower is used in the top, middle and base notes, evoking a fresh, sheer, airy element throughout.
The opening delivers a beautifully soft and instantly recognisable bloom of mimosa, iris, freesia, violet and bergamot β polleny, slightly powdery and luminously feminine, with the mimosa lending a honeyed warmth and the iris a clean, starchy elegance. The heart develops into the signature and most celebrated aspect of the composition: chamomile, narcissus, galbanum, geranium and jasmine weaving together into a herbal, green and softly soothing accord. The base then settles into a warm, gently woody and comforting foundation of sandalwood, musk, cedar, vanilla and amber that carries the soft floral warmth beautifully throughout the day.
