The Z1 was developed by BMW Technik as an innovative two-seat roadster and was first presented to the public at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Z1 became famous for its futuristic design and particularly its unique vertically sliding doors, which retract down into the body sills. It also featured innovative construction techniques, including a galvanised steel monocoque and removable plastic body panels.
Production ran from 1989 to 1991, with BMW producing exactly 8,000 Z1 roadsters before production ended in June 1991. The limited production run has helped establish the Z1 as a sought-after modern classic and an important part of BMW's roadster history.
