Large antique copper engraved map of the northern part of South America, by Henri Abraham CHATELAIN (1684-1743). The map depicts Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Guiana, and parts of Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina. The map displays the geographical and political boundaries of the time, showing cities, towns, roads, Indian tribes, and the Amazon River's extensive tributary network. The relief is illustrated pictorially, providing a sense of the topographical features of the region. The map clearly delineates the boundaries and key regions within South America, noting various indigenous tribes and settlements. It includes textual descriptions and observations, providing insights into the contemporary understanding of the region. 

This map was created during a time of exploration and colonial expansion, reflecting European interests in the New World.

Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a parisian Huguenot pastor. His famous work is the "Atlas Historique", published in seven volumes. Originally published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720 by L'Honoré et Châtelain, L'Atlas Historique was corrected, increased and republished until 1739, the date of the fourth and last edition. This encyclopedic work explains the history and the genealogy of the continents, with the geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography. The text is from Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.
