Large antique copper engraved map of Mexico, by Henri Abraham CHATELAIN (1684-1743). This print contains two maps and four views engraved on a single sheet, depicting various aspects of Mexico City and its surroundings during the early 18th century. These maps and views include a detailed depiction of the city, its grand temple, and the cultural practices of the local population. The print primarily focuses on Mexico City (known then as the city of Mexique) and its geographical and cultural context. The maps display the layout of the city and its surrounding lakes, highlighting prominent landmarks such as the grand temple. The views capture various aspects of local life, including religious practices, games, and other customs. Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a parisian Huguenot pastor. His famous work is the "Atlas Historique", published in seven volumes. Originally published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720 by L'Honoré et Châtelain, L'Atlas Historique was corrected, increased and republished until 1739, the date of the fourth and last edition.   This encyclopedic work explains the history and the genealogy of the continents, with the geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography. The text is from Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.
