There are several renowned swordsmiths known by the name "Kanenaga," spanning different eras and regions. Particularly famous among them are the smiths from Bizen Province (Okayama Prefecture) active during the Nanboku-cho period, as well as those who worked in Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture) and other areas from the Muromachi through the Edo periods.

Osafune Kanenaga of Bizen Province (Nanboku-cho period): The "Kanenaga" who is most highly acclaimed from an artistic standpoint was a swordsmith of the Osafune school, which flourished in Bizen Province from the late Kamakura period through the Nanboku-cho period. He is said to have been a pupil of the renowned master Chōgi (also read Nagayoshi). Just as Chōgi—a fellow smith of the same school—is often referred to by the Sino-Japanese reading of his name, Kanenaga is also sometimes called "Kenchō."

Style (Sōden-Bizen): Like his master Nagayoshi, he excelled in the flamboyant "Sōden-Bizen" style, which fuses the Bizen tradition with the Soshu tradition of Sagami Province. Blade Shape: The blade exhibits the bold, powerful profile characteristic of the Nanboku-chō period, featuring a wide body and an elongated *kissaki* (point). *Hamon* (Temper Line) and *Jitetsu* (Forging Pattern): The steel displays an *itame-hada* (wood-grain pattern) with a thick layer of *ji-nie* (crystalline particles in the ground steel). The *hamon* typically consists of *gunome* (undulating curves) or *chōji* (clove shapes) interspersed with dynamic effects such as *kinsuji* (golden streaks) and *sunagashi* (sweeping sand-like lines). Some examples even feature a *hitatsura* (full-blade temper) style, characterized by an exceptionally turbulent *hamon* pattern. Rarity: Signed examples are extremely rare; many of the blades designated as Important Swords (*Jūyō Tōken*) or Specially Important Swords (*Tokubetsu Jūyō Tōken*) are unsigned (*mumei*)—often attributed to Kanenaga—and have undergone *suriage* (shortening of the tang).
