This is a collective term for Japanese swords crafted by the Mihara school—a group of swordsmiths active from the late Kamakura period through the late Muromachi period, based in Mihara, Bingo Province (the area surrounding present-day Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture). A defining characteristic of these swords is their strong inheritance of the *Yamato-den* style (or *Yamato* temperament), a result of the historical prevalence of temple and shrine estates from Yamato Province (present-day Nara Prefecture) in the Mihara region.

Mihara swords are categorized based on the period of their creation as follows: *Ko-Mihara* (Old Mihara)—dating from the late Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period; these are considered the most distinguished and include many masterpieces. *Naka-Mihara* (Middle Mihara) or simply *Mihara*—dating from the early to mid-Muromachi period. *Sue-Mihara* (Late Mihara)—dating from the late Muromachi period (Sengoku period); this era saw the production of many mass-produced swords intended for actual combat.

Prominent swordsmiths of the Mihara school include the school's founder, Masaie, and his son, Masahiro. Mihara swords were highly prized by samurai for their exceptional cutting ability; notably, the fourth-generation Masaie is ranked in the highest category—*Saijō Ō-wazamono* (Supreme-Grade Sharpness)—in the *Kaihō Kenshaku*, an Edo-period ranking of sword-cutting performance. Famous examples include the "Ō-mihara," an exceptionally long *tachi* (measuring approximately 81 cm) that was handed down through the Asano family. These swords were also highly valued by Sengoku-period warlords—both as practical weapons for the battlefield and as prestigious rewards—such as the "Mihara *tachi*" gifted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to Sanada Masayuki.
