Title of the map:

"Premiere carte pour l'introduction à l'Histoire du Monde, où l'on remarque la Sphere, le Globe Celeste, et less differens sistemes du Monde"

Large antique copper engraved astronomical world map by Henri Abraham CHATELAIN (1684-1743).

This nice map features 11 distinct astronomical representations. These include a celestial hemisphere chart, an armillary sphere, a small double hemisphere terrestrial map, and various diagrams depicting the solar system and planets. Each element is accompanied by detailed explanations on either side of the illustrations, all printed in French. The primary focus of this map is cosmography, the study of the universe's structure and order. The celestial maps illustrate the constellations with mythological figures. The armillary sphere shows the structure of the celestial sphere used for teaching and understanding the heavens' movements. The diagrams explain various models of the solar system, including the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems, reflecting the evolving understanding of astronomy during this period.

The style reflects the Baroque era's fascination with detailed and decorative scientific illustration. The intricate engravings are ornate yet precise, showcasing the period's dedication to both aesthetic beauty and scientific accuracy

Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a parisian Huguenot pastor.

His famous work is the "Atlas Historique", published in seven volumes. Originally published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720 by L'Honoré et Châtelain, L'Atlas Historique was corrected, increased and republished until 1739, the date of the fourth and last edition.

This encyclopedic work explains the history and the genealogy of the continents, with the geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography.

The text is from Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.

Henri Chatelain represents the golden age of French cartography.
