The Dauntless was heavily involved in Operation Flintlock (January 30 – February 4, 1944), when U.S. carrier forces struck the atoll in advance of amphibious landings that secured a decisive foothold in the central Pacific. Aircraft from the fast carriers of Task Force 58—including USS Enterprise, Yorktown, Intrepid, and Essex—conducted sustained dive-bombing operations over Roi and Kwajalein during this critical phase of the campaign
