This relic originates from the honeycomb floor structure of Precious Metal, the extensively modified P-51D that competed in Unlimited Class racing at Reno. The composite honeycomb construction was engineered to deliver exceptional strength while minimizing weight—an essential balance in an environment where structural integrity must withstand extreme G-loads, vibration, and sustained high-speed flight.

Unlike standard wartime Mustang construction, racing modifications demand continual refinement of materials and internal components to extract every possible performance advantage. This section represents part of that specialized airframe engineering, developed specifically to endure the unique stresses of pylon racing while keeping the aircraft as light and efficient as possible.

Removed during race preparation and upgrades, this piece provides a direct connection to one of the most technically innovative Mustangs to circle the Reno pylons. It reflects not only the heritage of the P-51 design, but its evolution into a purpose-built racing machine at the highest level of Unlimited competition.
