About Whitey Herzog

Dorrel Norman Elvert “Whitey” Herzog (November 9, 1931 – April 15, 2024), nicknamed “The White Rat,” was a Major League outfielder and one of baseball’s most successful managers.

As a player (1956–1963) he appeared with the Washington Senators, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers, batting .257 with 25 home runs and 172 RBI in 634 games.

He is far better known for his managerial career, especially with the Kansas City Royals (three straight ALCS appearances 1976–78) and St. Louis Cardinals (1980–1990). He led the Cardinals to three National League pennants and the 1982 World Series championship, pioneering “Whiteyball” (speed, defense, and pitching on artificial turf). Career managerial record: 1,281–1,125 (.532).

Herzog was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.
