The United States Mint released the first Sacagawea Dollar in 2000, as a new, easily recognizable dollar coin for circulation, replacing the Susan B. Anthony dollar, which was not widely accepted by the public. The obverse design was meant to honor the legacy of Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman who played a vital role in guiding the Lewis and Clark expedition. Despite being designed for circulation, the Sacagawea dollar did not circulate as widely as the Mint had hoped, and some years, coins were only released to collectors.
In 2009, the series transitioned to the Native American Dollar series, which still features the iconic Sacagawea design on the obverse, while the reverse design changes each year to honor an important contribution of Indian tribes or individual Native Americans.
This 2019 issue features a one-year-only reverse design honoring Native American contributions to the U.S. Space Program! Specifically the design recognizes renowned NASA Engineer, Mary Golda Ross, who can be seen on the reverse writing calculations. Behind her, an Atlas-Agena rocket launches into space, with an equation inscribed in its exhaust cloud. In addition, an astronaut symbolic of Native American astronauts, including John Herrington, spacewalks above.
The obverse design features the widely recognizable image of Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide of Lewis and Clark, carrying her infant son, Jean-Baptiste. Randy'L Teton served as the likeness for Sacagawea and is the only person still alive who has served as a model for a circulating U.S. coin.
This 2019 D $1 Native American Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint and has been certified MS68 PL by NGC! According to NGC, the population of coins with this pedigree is limited to just 383 pieces!!
