Offered is a fascinating probable Golden Horde copper Pul, attributed to the Costeşti-Gyrlia settlement/mint area in present-day Moldova.
This is a small, thick, hammered medieval copper coin with extremely stylised raised lettering/designs characteristic of the unusual local Golden Horde coinage associated with the Costeşti settlement.
The coin has an exceptionally compact flan and very strong raised details for its size.
Costeşti was an important medieval Golden Horde settlement in the territory of present-day Moldova. Archaeological research has identified a significant group of locally produced Golden Horde copper puls from the settlement.
The unusual designs on these coins can be extremely stylised, with inscriptions becoming difficult to recognise and sometimes appearing almost symbolic.
This example is particularly interesting because of its very small 11.4 mm flan combined with a relatively substantial 1.91 g weight.
