Antique Victorian Carved Whitby Jet Pansy Brooch, c.1870–1880

A beautiful and unusually substantial Victorian Whitby jet brooch, deeply carved with a cluster of stylised pansy or viola flowers.

The large oval brooch is formed from polished black jet, with overlapping flowers carved in high relief across the entire surface. Each flower has individually modelled, folded petals, giving the piece wonderful depth and movement as the polished surfaces catch the light.

This is a particularly striking example of the large sculptural jet jewellery fashionable during the mid to late Victorian period. At approximately 2¾ inches across, it makes a substantial statement when worn.

The reverse retains its metal pin fitting and shows the hand-worked construction of the piece.

**green velvet box is not included - display only**

IMPORTANT POSTAGE INFORMATION

Please select your preferred postage service at checkout.

For tracked or signed delivery, scroll through the available postage options before completing payment. UK and international services may vary depending on the item’s size, value and destination.

International buyers are responsible for any customs duties, import taxes or handling fees charged by their country.

COMBINED POSTAGE

I am very happy to combine postage on multiple purchases wherever possible.

Additional items can usually be added at little or no extra postage cost, depending on their size, weight and destination. To qualify, all items must be purchased together and sent in the same parcel.

If combined postage is not calculated automatically, please request an updated invoice before making payment.

CONDITION

Unless otherwise stated, all items are antique, vintage or pre-loved and may show signs of age, wear and previous use.

I carefully inspect each piece and will describe any significant damage, repairs or flaws that I am aware of. Minor age-related wear, surface marks, tarnishing or patina should be expected and are part of the character of older pieces.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and often show condition more clearly than words alone.

Unless mentioned otherwise, jewellery will be sold with its stones and settings intact, and with clasps, pins or other fittings functioning as intended.

AGE, STYLE AND ATTRIBUTION

Dates, materials, origins and periods are identified to the best of my knowledge.

Where an item is described as being “in the style of” a particular period, this refers to its appearance, design, colour, shape or decorative influences rather than necessarily confirming its date of manufacture.

Descriptions of period, material or origin are based on research, construction methods, comparison with known examples and my experience handling antique and vintage jewellery. Unless supported by a hallmark, maker’s mark or other documentary evidence, these descriptions should be understood as informed opinions rather than formal guarantees.

PHOTOGRAPHS AND COLOUR

Photographs are taken to show the item as accurately as possible. Colours may vary slightly depending on lighting, screen settings and the device being used.

Props, boxes, stands, chains or display items shown in photographs are not included unless specifically stated in the listing.

RETURNS

Returns are accepted in accordance with the terms stated in the listing and eBay’s returns policy.

Please contact me through eBay’s messaging system before returning an item. Items must be returned in the same condition in which they were received, using secure and appropriate packaging.

Unless the item has been incorrectly described, return postage is the buyer’s responsibility. Original postage costs may not be refundable when an item is returned because it does not fit, is no longer wanted or was purchased in error.

Please review all measurements, photographs and condition information carefully before purchasing. Antique and vintage sizing can differ considerably from modern sizing.

**A NOTE ABOUT ANTIQUE AND DELICATE ITEMS**

Antique and vintage jewellery should be handled with care. Older clasps, pins, links, settings, threads and components may be more delicate than those found on modern jewellery.

Some pieces may have historic repairs, replacement findings, restringing or other alterations carried out during their lifetime. Any repairs or alterations that I am aware of will be mentioned in the description.

Items made from materials such as jet, glass, horn, vulcanite, early plastics, mother of pearl, enamel or cut steel may be vulnerable to impact, moisture, heat, perfume, hairspray and chemical cleaning products.

Please avoid pulling, bending or forcing clasps and fittings. Jewellery should be put on and removed gently, then stored separately in a dry place away from direct sunlight.

Unless specifically described as suitable for everyday wear, antique jewellery should be treated as a collectible piece and worn with appropriate care.

QUESTIONS

Please contact me through eBay’s messaging system with any questions before purchasing.

Measurements, additional photographs and further condition details are always available on request. If you are unsure about any wording, material, date or aspect of the listing, please ask. I would much rather clarify something beforehand than have you disappointed afterwards.
