Vintage 1947 edition of The Religious Background of the Bible by J. N. Schofield, published by Thomas Nelson and Sons Ltd.
Originally first published in December 1944, this copy is the 1947 reprint.
An interesting scholarly study of the religions, cultures and beliefs of the ancient Near East and their relationship to the Biblical world.
The book contains fascinating period illustrations and maps, including a colour map of Palestine and photographic illustrations of ancient religious artefacts, deities and archaeological material.
Bound in blue cloth with gilt praying-hands emblem to the front board and gilt title and author lettering to the spine.
Condition: Good vintage condition for its age. General rubbing, fading and age-related marks to the cloth boards, with some wear/fraying around the top of the spine and board edges. Pages show age-related toning and scattered foxing/spotting. Previous owner's handwritten inscription to the front dated Michaelmas 1947, together with an old handwritten price. No dust jacket.
Binding appears sound and the book presents well for an example approaching 80 years old.
Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A lovely collectable volume for anyone interested in Biblical history, archaeology, ancient religions, theology or vintage religious books.
