Carved Plum Blossom Wood Writing Box (Suzuribako)

A suzuribako is a traditional Japanese writing box, made to hold an inkstone, ink stick, and brush for calligraphy in the home. This example is finished in black lacquer with a plum blossom (ume) motif carved into the lid — plum blossom is a classic Japanese symbol of quiet resilience, often the first flower to bloom while snow still lingers.

The carving is unsigned but clearly hand-worked, with the kind of soft, uneven texture that machine-pressed reproductions don't have. Fine surface scratches and light wear from handling are present, consistent with a box that once held its place on someone's writing desk.
