Offering this pair of oversized (7-1/4 inches x 10-1/2 inches) die cut advertising pieces promoting the dry goods of the H. C. F. Koch & Sons retail store.


This is for their store located at Sixth Avenue and 20th Street in New York City.  That location was opened in 1875 and the store moved to Harlem in 1892--so this piece is dated to before 1892.  The store ad appears on only one of the two die-cuts...it shows the store building and promotes a "Great Closing Out Sale".   The indicia at the bottom on the back sides shows "manufactured" by Donaldson Brothers, Five Points NY.


The motif is of Chickens being married by a preacher (a black bird).  Both die cuts are shaped like an artist's palette, with a hole for the artist to hold it.  


The first die cut is of the rooster and hen, dressed in Victorian wedding attire, standing before the minister bird.  The second die cut shows the bride chicken holding a baby chick dressed in what looks like christening garb about to be baptized in a trough of water.


Nice, colorful, hard-to-find early lithography...the only set I have.
