Up for sale is an extraordinary, museum-grade handwritten letter by the Enlightenment philosopher and political theorist Baron de Montesquieu (Charles-Louis de Secondat).

WHY THIS MANUSCRIPT IS EXCEPTIONALLY RARE & HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT:

1. HANDWRITTEN BY MONTESQUIEU HIMSELF:
Due to Montesquieu's failing eyesight in his later years, the vast majority of his surviving correspondence was dictated to and written by secretaries. Authentic manuscripts written in Montesquieu's own hand are exceedingly rare on the market.

2. DIRECT REFERENCE TO HIS MASTERPIECE (THE SPIRIT OF LAWS / DÉFENSE):
In 1748, Montesquieu published his monumental work, "The Spirit of Laws" (De l'esprit des lois), which introduced the concept of the separation of powers. Following intense backlash from religious and political authorities, Montesquieu authored his famous defense in 1750: "Défense de l'Esprit des lois".

In this letter, Montesquieu explicitly writes:
"Je vous envoyay hier, Monsieur, ma Deffense..."
("I sent you yesterday, Sir, my Defense...")

Letters in which Montesquieu personally refers to the Defense of his magnum opus ("Deffense" in 18th-century French spelling) are virtually unheard of in private hands and represent a cornerstone piece of Enlightenment literature.

3. PERFECT HISTORICAL DATING (CIRCA 1750):
The endorsement on the reverse ("Montesquieu 1750?") aligns perfectly with the exact year Montesquieu composed and published his "Défense".
