This is remarkable…. Captured At Mandalay November 28 1885 By The Forces Under Major General Sir Harry Prendergast R.E., C.B., V.C. And Colonel G.E.L.S. Sanford R.E. brass trophy plaque. There’s some other writing that is too worn to make out (and the bits I can make out I can’t guarantee are correct - so I’ll leave it to you to conclude on exact wording!). This plaque has signs of wear, ageing, tarnishing, scratches and a lot of previous use. Uncleaned. Major General Prendergast was the Commander of the Burma Expeditionary Force and Nov 28 1885 marks the day that the royal capital Mandalay fell to British Forces after they had launched an invasion up the Irrawaddy River capturing the capital and causing the last monarch of Burma - King Thibaw to surrender. Following the capture the British Prize Committee distributed and sold seized ornamental objects, cannons + other items of war and mounting them with a brass commemorative tag, plaque or plate, bringing them back to Great Britain to display them in Barracks, Royal Buildings and Museums. This historical trophy plaque is one of those important pieces of 19th century military history and likely to have been screwed directly onto a wooden carriage or barrel of one of those cannons.
