ID . MAR . MDCCLXXXIV below. A young Andreani's interests in ballooning were inspired by the Montgolfier brothers in France. He saw his first unmanned Italian balloon flight in early 1784 by the Gerli brothers; Andrani commissioned a larger balloon from the brothers and completed his first manned flight over Italian soil at the age of 20; this first flight occurred on 25 February with himself and two of the Gerli brothers. A public demonstration was held on 13 March, with Andreani accompanied by two local farmers. They launched from Villa Sormani in Moncucco, rose to 5,000 feet and made a five mile journey before successfully landing. The emperor Josef II, fearing the worst, declined an invitation to watch; after the flight's success he commissioned this medal to be struck in Andreani's honor.A delightful rare medal!
