Product Description

This is a PCI bus graphics card, Mach64 (ATI), that an acquaintance had been keeping. [Edc296]

Although it is quite old (the sticker on the back says "21/02/95," making it over 31 years old), the rear bracket is clean, and I believe it is in very good condition.

Included Accessories

  • CD-R containing a restored CD image file:
    • ATI Installation 3.0

After booting from the CD, clicking the "ATI" icon will display the title screen.

Compatible Models / Operating Systems

I checked the README file on the CD and found the following information:

mach64
September 30, 1996

Contents

1.0 Introduction
2.0 Adapter Installation
3.0 Installation Notes for Windows 3.1
4.0 Installation Notes for Software MPEG for Windows 3.1x
5.0 Installation Notes for Windows 95
6.0 Installation Notes for Software MPEG for Windows 95
7.0 Installation Notes for AutoDesk products
8.0 Installation Notes for OS/2
9.0 Installation Notes for Windows NT 3.5/3.5.1 and 4.0
10.0 VESA Support
11.0 DMI Support
12.0 Reporting Problems
...

"AutoDesk products" appears to refer to AutoCAD, 3D Studio, AutoShade, etc.

Based on the information above, this card supports:

  • Windows 3.1
  • Windows 95
  • Windows NT 3.5 / 3.5.1 / 4.0
  • OS/2
  • Autodesk products such as AutoCAD, 3D Studio, and AutoShade

For reference, this appears to be essentially the same Mach64 chip that was commonly used in manufacturer-built PCs during the Windows 95 era.

The only noticeable difference is that the upper-left chip has been replaced with a smaller one, so this may be a later (possibly improved) revision.

Drivers

While searching for drivers, I found the following resources:

  • ATi Mach64 Family Display Driver - The Retro Web
  • ATi Mach 64, Rage & Radeon - Win3x.Org
  • DOS Days - ATI Downloads.mhtml

However, I have not tested any of them because I prefer not to download drivers from unofficial sources. Thank you for your understanding.

Operation Check

I tested the card using Windows 98SE, which is the oldest Windows operating system I currently own.

Ideally, testing should have been performed under the officially supported Windows 95, but neither I nor any of my acquaintances has that operating system available. Therefore, all testing was performed under Windows 98SE. Thank you for your understanding.

After installation, Windows 98SE automatically detected the card and installed the driver during startup.

It appears that Windows 98SE (and later versions) already include a compatible driver. (See Image 5.)

One difference I noticed:

  • Using the built-in Windows 98SE driver, the color setting was limited to High Color.
  • After installing the driver from the included Windows 95 CD, I was able to select True Color.

Next, I inserted the included ATI Installation 3.0 CD-R.

  • The CD started automatically.
  • Clicking the "ATI" icon displayed "ATI Installation 3.0."
  • Clicking the "Desktop" icon displayed "Hardware Information."

(See Image 6.)

Driver Installation Procedure

Following the on-screen instructions:

  1. Open Display Properties.
  2. Select Display Details.
  3. Choose Change Display.
  4. Specify the [Win95] folder on the included CD.

You will then see the following options:

  • Continue using the current driver (recommended)
  • Install other drivers

Select Install other drivers, click Show List, and choose:

ATI mach64 PCI (Japanese)

Many other language versions are also available.

During installation, you will receive the following message:

"A newer file exists on your computer than the one you are copying. Do you want to continue using the existing file?"

Select No.

Normally you would select Yes, but because these drivers predate DirectX, selecting No (overwriting the newer file) is necessary for proper operation under Windows 98SE.

(See Image 7.)

I have confirmed that both the Windows 98SE driver and the Windows 95 driver allow normal operation, including changing the display resolution and other functions.

Condition / Important Notes

I have attempted to perform as many functional tests as possible and provide a detailed description.

Although it is currently possible to operate without any problems, the equipment itself is very old, so it requires computer knowledge and software from that era, as well as troubleshooting know-how. Please understand it before purchasing.
