Description

About This Items

Size: 13.5 x 6.5 x 6 cm

Weight: 57 g

This is an item my grandparents bought as a souvenir when they traveled to Aizu nearly 50 years ago.

"Akabeko" literally translates to "red cow" in English ("beko" means "cow" in the local dialect). They have been crafted for over 400 years as both children's toys and protective charms. The red color is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect people, especially children, from illnesses. The unique head-bobbing motion is designed to soothe and entertain children.
