David W. Haddon (Fl. 1884 1911) - Newlyn School - Fisherman signed & Dated - Fine Art

This is a fantastic example by Haddon, the detail is sublime. It is fully signed and dated (1872 or 1892). The detail and warmth in the face of the fisherman is beautifully painted and you can see either Newlyn or maybe Penzance in the background. It just needs a reframe but in my opinion is one of his best works in watercolour & a fab Newlyn School painting

David W. Haddon - Biography

David W. Haddon was a Birmingham born artist who spent time painting in Newlyn, Cornwall alongside his fellow Birmingham artists Walter Langley and Edwin Harris. Haddon is featured in the Cornwall Artists’ Index. Haddon spent time painting the local Cornish fishing community. Many of his portraits depict seafaring men and women, most often in interiors, and illuminate the effects of such a life on the sitter's weathered face and hands. Unlike other Newlyn School painters, Haddon's portfolio of work is filled with close up interior portraits, rather than the dramatic coastal landscapes of Cornwall.
