An exceptionally scarce Austrian municipal Notgeld issue from the Commune of Rindlberg, this circa 1920 50 Heller Gutschein represents the localized emergency currency that circulated during the severe post-World War I monetary disruption in Central Europe.

The face is printed in green and black with an ornate vignette at left depicting a traditional female figure in regional dress, framed by decorative rural motifs. At right, the inscription identifies the note as a Gutschein, or “voucher,” issued by the Ortsgemeinde Rindlberg, the local municipality of Rindlberg, with the denomination 50 Heller prominently displayed in a decorative cartouche. The reverse features a green ornamental border with brown German text stating: “Die Gutscheine werden 4 Wochen nach Verlautbarung in gesetzl. Bargelde eingelöst — Nachahmung wird gesetzlich bestraft,” translating to “The vouchers will be redeemed in legal cash four weeks after announcement — imitation will be punished by law.” It is signed in print by the local official, “Der Ortsvorsteher: Franz Wagner,” and marked “2. Auflage” and “II. Ausgabe,” indicating a second printing and second issue.

The note presents with strong overall eye appeal for the type, retaining bold design detail, well-defined typography, and attractive period color. The paper shows expected age toning and light handling consistent with an original early 20th-century municipal emergency note, while the printed devices remain clear and visually engaging. The combination of green, black, and brown inks gives the piece a distinctive and highly collectible appearance.

Austrian Notgeld issues of this period were produced in small local quantities to address shortages of official coinage and circulating money following the collapse of wartime monetary stability. Many such pieces were redeemed, discarded, or lost, and surviving examples from smaller communities such as Rindlberg are notably difficult to locate today. This 50 Heller issue is especially desirable for collectors of Austrian emergency money, European municipal currency, and historically significant postwar paper issues.

A rare and appealing survivor of Austria’s Notgeld era, this Rindlberg 50 Heller Gutschein offers both strong historical context and excellent collector interest.
