A 1986 etching and aquatint print, titled La Jaula (The Cage) by the Mexican artist Alfredo Zalce (1908-2003). This piece features a stylized portrait of woman holding a small cage with bird on her head. Held in a black frame, this print is signed, dated, titled, and marked P. De A. for artist’s proof to the lower edge.

Born in 1908 in Michoacán during the Mexican Revolution, Alfredo Zalce developed a love for drawing as a young child, and was encouraged by his parents and peers to pursue art. He went on to study art at the Escuela Nacional des Artes Plásticas and eventually taught art at different institutions across Mexico. He begang his career as a muralist in 1930, becoming the first of his generation of muralists to use colored cement. Outside of murals, Zalce experimented with engraving, serigraphy, ceramics, and batik. His work can be seen today in museums around the world, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as well as the National Museum in Warsaw.

Condition:

Scratches to the frame. Some small spots of discoloration/foxing present to paper on margins.
