Nice antique copper engraved map of the baye of Portobelo in Panama, by Jacques-Nicolas BELLIN (1703-1772).

The map highlights the elongated and protected shape of Portobelo Bay, a highly strategic natural port for the Spanish Empire (starting point of the Indian Fleet charged with South American gold and silver). The inhabited areas of the city are colored red. The map also shows the various Spanish forts that defended the entrance to the bay. Many figures are scattered in the water; they represent depth measurements (probes) expressed in fathoms, essential to guide the navigation of warships and galleons. A long alphabetical table extends over the entire right part (from A to T). It lists the major points of interest, such as churches, observation houses of latitude, streams to make water (supply fresh water), roads leading to Panama and the various bastions. A stylized wind rose is centered in the middle of the plane to indicate orientation, and a graphic scale entitled "Scale of 300 Toises" adorns the bottom of the composition on a yellow banner.
