WW II Portrait of Afro-American soldier James Joseph Gaines in Japan
Taken in occupied Japan six months after the end of WW2

With double inscriptions by Gaines to his Japanese friend, also a verso inscriptions from his friend and recipient named Takeda. Dated March 1946.

Inscription on the lower right corner reads "To my friend Takeda", and on the reverse in an inscription in both Japanese and English that reads "from my friend Jamese Joseph Gaines" This photograph originates from a Japanese family whose association with this soldier dates back to the early days just after the end of World War II.


Details:

Vintage and original gelatin silver print with inscriptions front and back in ink.

- Date printed: March 1946.

Size: 5 x 4 1/4 in. (128 x 105 mm).

Condition: Print exhibits good tones and clarity with minor discoloration and silvering due to age. There is a crease in the lower left corner and finger dents along the entire right edge.
