The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the world's first mass-produced jet fighter to see combat. With a speed exceeding 850 km/h, it was virtually untouchable by most Allied piston-engined fighters. During the final stages of the war, it became the Luftwaffe's most advanced weapon for countering the Allied strategic bombing offensive.

The unit most closely associated with the combat deployment of the Me 262 was *Jagdgeschwader* 7 "Nowotny" (JG 7)—the world's first operational jet fighter wing. Formed in late 1944, it conducted operations against American strategic bomber formations attacking targets within Germany. Despite limitations caused by fuel shortages, technical issues, and the enemy's numerical superiority, JG 7 pilots achieved a significant number of aerial victories.

One attempt to enhance the effectiveness of the Me 262 interceptor involved the use of WGr.21 (*Werfer-Granate* 21) rockets. This weapon was developed to break up tight formations of heavy bombers. The 21 cm caliber rockets were fired from launchers mounted beneath the forward fuselage. Their purpose was to detonate within or near the bomber formation, forcing the crews to maneuver and thereby facilitating a subsequent attack with the aircraft's onboard cannons.

Although this variant appeared very late in the war and saw limited deployment, it remains one of the most distinctive and popular versions of the famous Luftwaffe jet among scale modelers.

The Messerschmitt Me-262A *Schwalbe* (German for "Swallow") was a German twin-engine jet fighter-bomber featuring an all-metal, low-wing design. The Me-262 was the first jet aircraft in aviation history to see combat. Its maiden flight using piston engines took place in 1941, while the first flight powered by turbojet engines occurred on July 18, 1942. The initial airframe design—designated P.1065—was presented as early as 1939 and, surprisingly, did not differ significantly from the final version. A decision was quickly made to incorporate swept wings and flight-test the airframe using piston engines (Jumo 210), a process successfully completed in 1941. Due to issues with the intended powerplant (the BMW 003 engine), the Me-262's first jet-powered flight was actually performed using Junkers Jumo 004 engines. Interestingly, the Me-262 was structurally ready for mass production by the end of 1942. However, its entry into service was significantly delayed. This was caused by material shortages (specifically a lack of tungsten and chromium) that necessitated design changes, failures of the BMW 003 engines, and—crucially—Hitler's insistence that the Me-262 serve as a high-speed bomber rather than a fighter. Consequently, the aircraft did not enter operational service until 1944. Given the Allies' overwhelming air superiority at the time, as well as shortages of fuel and trained crews, the Me-262 could not significantly alter the course of the war. However, it was undoubtedly technologically superior to enemy aircraft, achieving a kill-to-loss ratio of 9:1 in its favor. In total, approximately 1,400 aircraft were built, though only about 300 entered service. Several variants of this revolutionary aircraft were developed, including bomber (A-2a), reconnaissance (A-1a/U3 and A-4a), day fighter (A-1a), and night fighter (B-1a/U1) versions.
