It's not just graphically a different colour from the similar looking white Orange Micro Terror. It is a different amp. It has a much more noticable growl and beefier tone. Additionally, it has an FX loop, so you can place your effects earlier in the chain of amp stages, after the preamp, but before the power amp. This means that it works especially well with modulation effects, like delay, reverb, chorus, flange, tremolo, univibe, etc., because those effects are especially susceptible to distortion after the power amp. I personally like to stick an EQ in the FX loop as it allows me to shape the tone at a much earlier stage, thereby making the EQ have more of an impact overall. The Micro Terror has neither an FX loop, nor the deep dark growling tone of the Micro Dark. I strongly suggest looking up the reviews for this amp, as they are glowing. 

The Orange PPC108 8 ohm cab, which is included, allows the signal from the head to reach your ears through its 8 inch speaker. Combined, they're an impressive pair and have a small footprint. 

I am surprised that I don't see more written about this amp, or people discuss it, because what it does, it does very well. The amp is minimalistic in terms of controls and features, true. However, those controls are, I wager, much more powerful than those on a more traditional amp. Take the middle 'shape' knob, which controls EQ. Most three-knob EQ controls, with bass, middle and treble are low impact and not that useful or powerful. Yes, you use them because you have to, but the shape knob on the Micro Dark is simple. It will take you quickly from deep dark guitar tones, to chimey, almost octave-up, treble. And, the controls should not be thought of as independent. You should seek to adjust your tone alongside the volume and gain knobs, which, respectively, control the level of clean and dirty tones. So, perhaps the controls themselves can be thought of as basic, yes. But, they're also stripped down to perfection, where there is no seemingly pointless filler, as on many other amps, especially at a similar price range.

I've already mentioned the focused controls, the tone, and the FX loop. But one small feature that is often overlooked is the headphone jack. Yes, like other amps, it has a 1/4" headphone jack so that you can play the amp through headphones. You've seen it a million times before, right? 

Wrong. 

The amp head has one special feature compared to other heads and combo amps: it can be played without a load. What does that mean? Let me explain:

An amp head needs to be attached to a speaker where it can send signals, otherwise there is a risk that the amp head gets damaged. And, in a combo amp, the 'head' and speaker are always attached, so you can't detach it. But, the Micro Dark (and Micro Terror), don't need a head to always be attached. That means that the head can act as a travel amp, that you can use with headphones, as long as you can get it to a source of mains power. You can leave the speaker cab at home. 

You can play guitar on your commute to work using this amp head and a set of headphones - as long as you find mains power. And, remember what I said about how this amp has a small footprint? Easy travel, baby. God. I'm such a good writer. It's all coming back around. This is just like Fight Club, where it all falls into place! But, unlike the classic 1999 film I encourage you to talk about this amp and tell your friends. There will be violence, but only over who gets to take the amp head home. It's an ironic twist on the anti-consumerist Fight Club reference from earlier, in which we reaffirm our commitment to consumerism. Happy bidding!
