A Note on Authenticity: All club photos in my listings are real, original photographs of the actual item for sale — no AI involved. The only exception is my “Daily Enchanter” gazette-style graphic, a fun, clearly-labeled creative piece for marketing flair, not a representation of the product itself.
A antique hickory-shafted splice-neck wood by J. Aitken — from a respected Scottish clubmaking family with deep roots in the game’s most celebrated golfing towns.
The Maker:
The Aitken name is well documented in Scottish hickory clubmaking. Alexander Aitken of Gullane learned his craft under Douglas McEwan — one of the most celebrated names in Scottish clubmaking — before opening his own business in Edinburgh in 1892 and establishing himself permanently in Gullane by 1897, where he earned a reputation as a very fine clubmaker. J. Aitken is believed to be a family member, with clubs stamped under the “J. Aitken” name representing a scarce and seldom-encountered branch of the Aitken clubmaking legacy.
The Construction:
As clearly visible in the photo, this wood features:
• Beautiful warm persimmon/beech wood head with rich natural brown patina
• “J. AITKEN” stamp clearly visible on the crown
• Original black whipping intact at the hosel
• Splice-neck construction — hand-fitted joint predating the socket neck design
Condition: Good for age. Honest wear and patina consistent with age — crown shows light surface marks, whipping and joint intact. See photos for full detail.
A wonderful piece for collectors of Scottish hickory woods, Aitken family clubs, or splice-neck construction — the J. Aitken stamp is a genuinely scarce find in the collector market. Message with any questions — happy to provide more photos or measurements.
