The particularly atmospheric and increasingly scarce early Victorian leather fire bucket retaining its original japanned decoration and sign written City of London arms and date, the whole constructed from thick stitched leather with a riveted and leather-bound swing handle, the tapered body decorated with the distinctive shield of the City of London, displaying the Cross of St George and an upright sword, framed by scrolling green foliate decoration with berries upon a black ground and surviving from the middle of nineteenth century England.

Presented in completely untouched country house condition. The leather has hardened naturally with age and displays expected shrinkage, surface wear and losses around the rim together with historic cracking to the painted finish. The original handle remains in place, though is detached at one side, which could be repaired, and the surviving decoration is remarkably evocative despite its age-related wear. It has not been restored or over-cleaned, retaining exactly the character collectors seek. Traces of gilded numerals survive to the sides, with ‘1’, ‘5’ and ‘8’ present, with the remaining ‘8’ having been largely worn away. The bucket possesses a wonderfully untouched surface, the crazed paint and rich patination speaking to generations of service before retirement.

Leather fire buckets such as this formed an essential part of organised fire protection throughout Britain well into the Victorian period, particularly before the widespread installation of pressurised water supplies. Buckets bearing civic insignia were commissioned by corporations, parishes, guilds and commercial premises, each forming part of a designated fire station or bucket chain. Survivors retaining their original painted heraldry are increasingly uncommon, with examples displaying the arms of the City of London being especially sought after for both their decorative quality and historical significance. In the summer of 1858, London experienced the infamous "Great Stink," where a severe heatwave baked the city's untreated sewage in the River Thames. The unbearable stench disrupted Parliament and forced lawmakers to pass emergency legislation, leading civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette to design the massive underground sewer network still used today.

A wonderfully honest survivor of Victorian civic history, combining sculptural form, exceptional surface and the enduring appeal of original painted heraldry. An increasingly difficult object to acquire, particularly with such untouched character and decorative presence.
